As urban housing prices in the UK continue to escalate, particularly in cities like Oxford and Cambridge, significant portions of the workforce are being displaced into rural areas. However, these workers frequently encounter a “triple bind” – they are priced out of urban housing, dependent on private cars due to inadequate public transport, and increasingly discouraged from commuting by car to cities. This situation underscores the urgent need for innovative solutions like the mobility hubs to enhance rural mobility.

In my recent research, I explore the potential of mobility hubs as a transformative solution for rural regions with infrequent bus services. Mobility hubs, which integrate multiple transport modes such as cycling and bus services, could play a role in diversifying transport options in areas often described as “transport deserts.”

Understanding Transport Deserts

A “transport desert” refers to a rural region that is inadequately served by public transportation, severely limiting residents’ mobility and access to opportunities. This concept is particularly relevant in rural England, where public transport availability is significantly lower compared to urban areas.

In my study, I analyse public transport availability using GTFS (General Transit Feed Specification) data, offering a comprehensive view of bus frequency across the country. The findings reveal a stark disparity in bus service availability between urban and rural areas, with many rural regions experiencing severe public transport deprivation.

The Role of Mobility Hubs

The concept aims to create a more flexible and integrated transport system, especially in a rural setting. By providing safe cycling routes to these hubs and ensuring consistent bus services, we can meaningfully improve residents’ transport options.

Key insights from the research

Public Transport Availability: The research leverages bus frequency data to pinpoint areas with the lowest levels of public transport. This information is critical in identifying where mobility hubs could have the most significant impact.

Cycling Potential: Utilising the Propensity to Cycle Tool (PCT), the study assesses the likelihood of residents adopting cycling as part of their commute, especially with the support of e-bikes. The findings suggest a substantial potential for increased cycling in conjunction with mobility hubs.

Economic and Environmental Benefits: Enhancing public transport through **mobility hubs** in rural areas can yield broader economic benefits by improving access to jobs and services. Environmentally, reducing car dependency will lower carbon emissions, contributing to national climate goals.

The way forward

The implementation of mobility hubs in rural areas could be a game-changer for improving transport connectivity and reducing car dependency. However, the success of these hubs will depend on several factors, including the provision of safe cycling routes, consistent bus services, and active community engagement.

This research is just the beginning. By continuing to explore and refine the concept of mobility hubs, we can move towards a more equitable and sustainable transport system that benefits all residents, regardless of where they live.
